Campaign Profitability Analysis: When Does a Discount Make Sense?
November 18, 2025 · KârHesapla · Ferhat Demir · E-commerce Specialist
A 20% discount wipes out all of the profit on a product with a 20% margin. For a discount to make sense, the increase in sales has to more than make up for the lost profit.
The right comparison
Total Campaign Profit = Units Sold × (1 + Increase%) × Discounted Unit Profit
If this amount is above your normal total profit, the campaign is profitable. Because unit profit erodes quickly with a discount, even small discount rates can require a very large increase in sales.
Practical rules
- First calculate your break-even discount rate; never go above it.
- If the unit profit at the discounted price is negative, no increase in sales can save the campaign.
- If you run the campaign to clear stock or collect reviews, cap the loss as a “marketing budget”.
