How Is Desi (Volumetric Weight) Calculated? Formula, Examples and Tips
May 6, 2026 · KârHesapla · Ferhat Demir · E-commerce Specialist
Desi is the volumetric weight unit Turkish carriers use to price shipments:
Desi = (Width × Length × Height in cm) / 3000
The carrier bills whichever is greater: the calculated volumetric desi or the package's actual weight. This is called the "billable weight".
Examples
| Package | Volumetric | Actual | Billed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40×30×20 cm, 2 kg | 8 desi | 2 kg | 8 desi |
| 25×20×10 cm, 6 kg | 1.67 desi | 6 kg | 6 kg |
Divisors
- 3000: Domestic standard
- 5000: International air freight
- 6000: Sea freight
Tips
- Measure the package at its widest points; with bulging poly mailers, corner measurements are misleading.
- If you are hitting a minimum-charge tariff, making the package smaller may not pay off; calculate first.
- Enter the desi information on the product page correctly; any under-declared difference is billed to you.
To enter the three dimensions and see the result instantly, use the Volumetric Weight (Desi) Calculator.
